Scientific or graphing calculator? What should students purchase?

As your children grow older your school supply list will get shorter but not necessarily cheaper.

One thing that could cause sticker shock to parents of high and middle school students is a special calculator. A majority of schools prefer that students use their own scientific calculator. In the highest level math classes like AP Calculus the use of a graphing calculator may be required.

But, what's the real difference? A scientific calculator is able to perform functions that go beyond subtraction, addition multiplication and division. The most common scientific calculators have special buttons for parentheses trigonometric functionsand exponents, inverted numbers and pi as well as other functions.

A graphing calculator does even more. It'll have a larger screen that allows you to type in a function, then see a graph of it.

Best Find's Geek Squad agent Derek Meister says scientific calculatorscan run between $10 and $60. Calculators that graph are generally priced more, usually between $80 to $150.Should back-to-school students purchase technological or graphing calculators? (KOMO News)

However, Best Buy says you aren't required to purchase one, and suggests checking with your school first.

Harmony Weinberg, Edmonds School District's media and public relations supervisor, tells KOMO News each individual school decides on its own rules.

"For higher level classes, like AP Calculus, it is often expected that students have a handheld graphing calculator, such as TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89."

These calculators are great for AP tests. Weinberg adds that schools have a procedure in place that allows students to use calculators, like they do textbooks if they don't have or choose not to buy their own.

The Edmonds Education district calculators are dealt with in a similar manner to textbooks, namely, they are not subject to damage or loss, however they aren't charged to use.

Another option could be in their school-issued laptop. Weinberg states that at Edmonds "all students have access to scientific and graphing calculators through their district-issued Chromebook." The district is also encouraging teachers to use Desmos online calculators, as these can be used in state-wide tests as well.

West Seattle family says school policy on quarantine is biased against children who are not vaccinated

SEATTLE A family from West Seattle say their young son was instructed to stay at home when encountering an individual who was positive for COVID-19, prompting his family members to assert that their son was targeted and was treated differently by school officials because the boy was not vaccine-free..

Last week, the 12-year-old student who attends Denny International Middle School was exposed to someone in class who was diagnosed with COVID-19.

School officials advised him to stay at home for two weeks because the vaccine he received was not up to date.

His family members have since learned that had he was vaccinated, the seventh grade student would not be forced to miss class for as it was as long as he did not show any symptoms from the virus.

"My kid has no symptoms," stated Jeremy Gollyhorn, the boy's father. "He's totally healthy. How can he not get an unbiased COVID test, and go back to class?"

Gollyhorn said his son is being subject to a different standard as students who have received their shots. Even when he had a negative COVID-19 test, the boy would not be allowed to return to school until the quarantine period of two weeks is complete.

But close friends who have been fully vaccinated and show no symptoms don't need to stay in quarantine. They can go back to class, though they are urged to get checked three to five days later in order to confirm.

Gollyhorn claimed that it does not make sense.

"Vaccinated people can still spread COVID too so what's the difference there?" said Dr. A. declared.

A spokesperson confirmed that Seattle Public Schools is following public health guidelines set by state officials.

Gollyhorn has said that the policy deprives people of their freedom of choice. He also said that his family doesn't trust the vaccinations, and that situations like this can only motivate him to resist.

In the year since Seattle Public Schools started the school year on September. 1, the district has confirmed 117 positive cases of COVID-19 while Denny International Middle School has confirmed four cases of COVID-19 in the span of four days.

It is unclear how many employees as well as students have been advised to be in quarantine due to exposures. However, such absences are considered excused.
